Welcome to TELwiki

TEL stands for Technology Enhanced Learning. This is a term introduced by JISC in preference to the earlier term 'e-learning'. The problem of 'e-learning' is that it implies it is different to normal learning. This can create the impression that it is a sort of bolt-on element to the normal practice of teaching. TEL has the advantage of stressing that learning is a broader activity and process and that technology can enhance the process by being integrated appropriately into teaching and the learners' processes and activities. More recently the term 'blended learning' has been favoured as it emphasises that technology based approaches to teaching and supporting learning are an integral part of the general teaching and learning process. The blend is generally assumed to be of traditional and IT based methods. However, it is entirely possible to blend teaching approaches and learning activities that have no technological component (in the modern sense of C&IT) at all. Some teachers would say that they have been using a blended approach for years - a blend of lectures and tutorials, of essay and exam assessment methods, and so on. This is why I prefer to stick with the term 'technology enhanced learning'.

This is likely to turn out to be a retirement project so not much is likely to be added for a couple of years.
